The Heart of Jesus | Week Six
Begin by sharing prayer requests and praying for one another
Read John 16:4-15 aloud as a group
Key Takeaways
Jesus prepares His disciples for His departure by promising to send the Holy Spirit—the Helper (Paraclete). The Spirit will not just be with believers but IN them. The Spirit has two primary roles: (1) convicting the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and (2) guiding believers into all truth by glorifying Jesus.
Discussion Questions:
Read John 16:4-7. Why does Jesus say it's "to your advantage" that He goes away? How would you have felt as one of the disciples hearing this?
What does the word "Paraclete" mean? How does understanding this word change your view of the Holy Spirit's role in your life?
Read verses 8-11. What are the three things the Spirit convicts the world about? Sin (unbelief in Jesus), Righteousness (only found in Jesus, not our efforts), Judgment (Satan is defeated; freedom is possible). Which of these three convictions do people in your life most need to hear? How might the Spirit use you to communicate this?
Read John 16:13-15. The Spirit guides us into "THE truth" (Jesus), not just general truths. How does this focus shape the way we should read the Bible and grow spiritually?
Jesus said the Spirit would "declare to you the things that are to come." How does the Spirit give us confidence and hope for the future, even in trials?
This Week’s Challenge:
Repentance:
Journal about one area where you've been resisting the Spirit's conviction. Confess it to God and ask for His help to respond in faith rather than defensiveness.
Close in Prayer
Thank God for sending the Holy Spirit to dwell in us
Ask the Spirit to convict those in your life who don't know Jesus
Pray for boldness to share your faith despite potential pushback
Request that the Spirit would guide your group deeper into knowing Jesus through His Word
