Sermon Overview

We are confronted with a critical choice that shapes our entire spiritual journey: will we love the world or love God? This message unpacks what loving the world actually means—embracing a system hostile to God through the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. We're given five compelling reasons to reject worldliness: It's incompatible with loving the Father, it doesn't last, it puts us on the wrong side of coming judgment, we know better through the truth of Christ, and it's built on lies from the father of lies himself. But here's the beautiful promise: when we say yes to Jesus, we receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit—not reserved for some elite class, but given to every believer. This indwelling Spirit teaches us, safeguards us from falsehood, and enables us to live the eternal life we were designed for, starting right now. The invitation is clear: remain in Christ, and experience the fullness of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in intimate relationship.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What does John mean by "the world" in this passage? How is this different from God's creation or the people in the world?

  2. Review the three temptations (lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, pride of life). How do these connect to Eve's temptation in the Garden (Genesis 3) and Jesus' temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4)?

  3. Why does John say loving the world is incompatible with loving the Father?

  4. What does it practically look like to "remain in Christ" in your daily life? What habits, disciplines, or choices help you stay connected to Him?

  5. The sermon mentioned that "remaining" is a mark of genuine Christianity. What role does the church community play in helping us remain in Christ? How can we better support each other in saying no to the world?

  6. Read verse 25: "This is what he promised us—eternal life." How does knowing that eternal life starts NOW (not just in heaven) affect how you live today?

  7. What are some modern-day "antichrists" or false teachings that try to lead people away from the truth about Jesus? How can we recognize and resist them?

This Week’s Discipleship Rhythm: Repentance

  • Identify which of the three temptations (flesh, eyes, pride) is most active in your life right now, confess it to God and one trusted person and create one practical boundary to help you say "no" to it.
