1 John: Real Christianity | Week Seven
Begin by sharing prayer requests and praying for one another
Read 1 John 5:1-12 aloud as a group
Sermon Overview
This week, Pastor Josiah explored three interconnected pictures of freedom found in 1 John 5:1-12:
Freedom from burden - God's commandments aren't burdensome when we understand faith as belief, love, and obedience working together
Freedom from the power of the world - Victory over both external opposition and internal struggles with our old nature
Freedom from doubt - The testimony of the Spirit, water, and blood affirms our faith
Freedom for eternal life - We're freed for eternity with Jesus, not just from something
Discussion Questions:
The Three-Strand Cord of Faith. Josiah described real faith as belief (head knowledge), love (heart knowledge), and obedience (hand knowledge) woven together. Which of these three comes most naturally to you? Which is most challenging?
What's the difference between a faith based on what you do versus who you are in Christ? Can you share an example from your own life where you've struggled with performance-based faith?
John points to three witnesses: the water (Jesus' baptism), the blood (the cross), and the Spirit (living in believers). Why is it significant that we have the Spirit's testimony inside us? How does this help during times of doubt?
Josiah said: "The testimony of the Spirit is greater than the testimony of man, and that includes our own testimony." When have your feelings or experiences made you doubt God's truth? How can you practically rely on the Spirit's witness over your own feelings this week?
What practices help you maintain a "gospel memory" that's Spirit-driven rather than self-driven? (Examples: daily Scripture reading, worship, prayer, community, etc.)
This Week’s Discipleship Rhythm: Prayer
In your prayer time, spend 5 minutes in silence asking the Holy Spirit to testify to you about Jesus
