The Truman Show is a movie about a guy who grew up in on a TV set without knowing it. Everyone he met was an actor and every part of his life was on camera for the whole world to see. He was living in a false world for someone else’s financial gain.

How would you feel if you discovered that your entire life is programmed around someone else’s financial gain? When does it feel like it is?

Read 1 Timothy chapter 6

  1. Who is Timothy and why is this letter to him for us too?

  2. What are some evidences of those who are seeking false-hope in money? (v. 4)

  3. How should we respond to the world’s pursuit of us for their financial gain? How often? (v. 11-12)

Look at verses 17-19.

  1. Paul gives out some commands for those who are rich in this world.

  2. Why does Paul need to give these commands to the rich? What are ways we are tempted to put our hope in our financial resources?

  3. Why should we put our hope in God? What is there to gain?

  4. In addition to earthly wealthy, what other false-hope should we not pursue? Why? (v. 20-21)

  1. Where in your life are you being pursued by commercialism and false-hope in this world?

  2. How can you change your routine to “flee” from the false-hope and into hope, peace and contentment in God and his promises?

  3. How can you better pursue hope in the promises of God on a regular basis?

  4. Pray to be able to recognize the false hopes in your life and replace them with the truths and promises of God.

“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” - Peter 3:15
